SIALY 2027: CEMAC supports the 10th edition

The countdown has begun. A few months before its 10th edition, the International Agri-food Show of Yaoundé reaches a new milestone with the support of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC).

As part of the preparations for SIALY 2027, Mrs Bibiane MOTTO, Founding President of the show, was received by the Representative of the CEMAC Commission in Cameroon. The meeting was an opportunity to present the ambitions of this landmark edition and to discuss the show’s role in the agri-food development of the sub-region.

This partnership confirms SIALY’s mission: to be much more than a showcase of Cameroonian know-how — a true regional hub where producers, processors, investors and decision-makers from across Central Africa meet and build together.

A 10th edition that marks a milestone. Since its first edition in 2010, SIALY has supported the growth of agriculture and agro-industry by highlighting innovation, entrepreneurship and “Made in Cameroon”. For this anniversary edition, it returns more ambitious than ever, with one promise: more meetings, more opportunities, more innovation.

SIALY 2016 in preparation

4th EDITION OF THE INTERNATIONAL AGRICULTURE AND AGRI-FOOD INDUSTRY SHOW OF YAOUNDÉ

FROM 6 TO 16 DECEMBER 2016

“In 2016, the major challenge for our country remains creating the conditions for genuine industrialisation”

This strong statement by the President of the Republic in his traditional address to the nation on 31 December 2015 is both an invitation and an instruction to the Government to speed up putting in place the prerequisites for our country’s industrialisation.

From 6 to 16 December 2016, SIALY will hold its 4th edition — a recognition for the only show that remains the largest sub-regional event of the agro-industrial sector, with the latest and most innovative national and international offering in research, innovation and production. An agriculture and agri-food industry show for emerging countries, SIALY has become a reality in Cameroon thanks to a public–private partnership.

SIALY 2015: the 3rd Agriculture and Agri-food Show is in active preparation

The Italian Republic has agreed to be the special guest of SIALY 2015, which promises rich opportunities for participants.
Organised every two years in April by the REFLEX communication agency, the 3rd edition of SIALY will be held from 21 to 27 April 2015 on the esplanade of Yaoundé City Hall, under the very high patronage of the Prime Minister, Head of Government. The chosen theme is: “The challenges of the agri-food industry in the context of the EU–Central Africa Economic Partnership Agreements (EPA) for trade and development”.
Many foreign participants have already confirmed, and many stands have been booked well in advance. The Italian Republic, a major agro-industrial country, is the special guest of the 2015 edition. Through its leading agri-food companies, it will present its expertise in the field. Cameroonian project developers will thus be able to seal partnerships with Italian business people in particular, but also with entrepreneurs from the other countries present at the Show.
Bibiane Motto Atsama, promoter of the International Agri-food Industry Show of Yaoundé (SIALY), announces some thirty countries from Africa, Asia and Europe at what is rightly presented as the largest agri-food show in sub-Saharan Africa.

SIALY: the agri-food showcase of sub-Saharan Africa

SIALY is a response to the public authorities’ constant call to promote Cameroon’s agricultural and agro-industrial potential. At a time when the country is firmly committed to second-generation agriculture — more mechanised and therefore more productive — the International Agri-food Industry Show of Yaoundé presents itself as a true showcase for the sector. Unique of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa, SIALY offers its participants several objectives, including: selling the Cameroon brand; revealing Cameroonian and international innovations in the agri-food industry to the general public; creating a forum for exchange between financiers and project developers; encouraging a competitive environment…
In 2013, the 2nd Yaoundé Agri-food Show welcomed nearly 100,000 visitors and 120 exhibitors, including 61 private companies, 34 CIGs (Common Initiative Groups), 12 public and semi-public institutions, 3 international organisations and 5 countries (France, Senegal, Germany, Benin and Chad).
The ambitions of SIALY 2015, given the strong demand for participation and the confirmations received three months before the event: more than 300 exhibitors and at least 200,000 visitors are expected. This bodes well for a resounding success.

Opening statement by the Minister of Mines, Industry and Technological Development at the press briefing on the Yaoundé Agri-food Industry Show, SIALY 2013.

Ladies and gentlemen of the press, thank you for kindly accepting the invitation sent to you. It is a real pleasure for me to speak on this solemn occasion, to inform national and international opinion that Cameroon is organising the second edition of the International Agri-food Industry Show of Yaoundé, from 2 to 8 April 2013.
Indeed, under the high patronage of the Prime Minister, Head of Government, this event is a biennial meeting reserved for professionals in the agri-food industry. The aim of SIALY is therefore to promote Cameroonian inventions and know-how in the agri-food field. It is also the ideal place to present Cameroonian culture and tourism, potential sources of foreign currency, to the world.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Cameroonian industry accounts for about a third of gross domestic product and employs around 15% of the working population. The manufacturing sector’s contribution to GDP has stagnated for years at around 11% and essentially covers the needs of the local market.
The agro-industrial sector, which processes agricultural products into semi-finished and finished products, accounts for more than 33% of industrial production, 22.2% of industrial value added and nearly 6% of exports.
And yet Cameroon’s agricultural potential offers a good foundation for the development of agro-industry, which has traditionally always been one of the most important links in the national manufacturing sector. Given the great potential our country offers, it is fitting to highlight what has already been done and to reflect on adopting new policies to boost this important part of the national economy. SIALY is therefore an ideal setting for developing business opportunities between foreign investors and agricultural processing project developers, and between agro-industrial project developers and financing bodies.
SIALY was also designed to serve as an interface between operators in the agri-food industry and the public authorities.
As such, it gives agro-industrialists the opportunity to showcase their know-how, which may be supported by the State.
All players in the sector will be brought together to discuss issues related to the agri-food industry. The resolutions from this work could serve as a working basis for the public authorities, in order to encourage the creation of production structures and markets, and ultimately to create the wealth needed to revive the national economy.
For its part, the Government has undertaken actions to promote this sector, which has a high potential for employment and can, in time, create manufacturing value added. In order to bring about predominant manufacturing production that would lead to a sharp increase in GDP of around 23 to 24%, MINMIDT has identified promising sectors to turn into so-called structuring projects.
The first sector identified today is palm oil, developed by the APROCOM-PH project, the oil palm sector competitiveness project. The cotton/textile sector is also an important part of the Cameroonian economy.

To boost this sector, the Government is putting in place a package of measures to encourage local processing of at least 30% of cotton production by 2015. These measures include:
– upstream control and risk minimisation on the one hand, the internationalisation of the cotton trade, and on the other, the continuous integration of the textile and clothing industry;
– the industrial restructuring of spinning and weaving units and, finally, the migration of clothing and apparel activity from the informal to the formal sector.
Other promising sectors are also being restructured and developed with various private partners. These include maize, cassava, rubber and sugar cane.
The latter is currently being developed and is well advanced under the Bertoua-Batouri sugar project, covering nearly 20,000 hectares.
These agro-industrial projects are backed by a policy to develop the fertiliser sector, notably through the construction of a chemical fertiliser plant.
This show therefore comes at the right time to reflect on other development strategies for the sector. On the programme: a forum on agri-food topics, a trade fair showcasing agri-food products and inventions resulting from research, cultural entertainment and a tourist excursion to showcase our cultural heritage to foreigners. There will also be B2B meetings between professionals in the sector to forge fruitful partnerships on the one hand and, on the other, to find solutions for the development of the agri-food industry.
SIALY 2013 will be attended by agri-food equipment suppliers, processing industries, project developers, financing bodies, research institutes, trading companies,
higher education institutions, inventors and innovators. Several foreign countries have begun to express their wish to take part in the show.
We will inform you of their exact number in the coming days.
All that remains is for me to invite you, ladies and gentlemen, to come from 2 to 8 April 2013 to the esplanade of Yaoundé City Hall to honour SIALY 2013 with your presence.
Ladies and gentlemen of the press, this is the information we wanted to share with you today. It is now up to you to bring it to the attention of the public, who should also be made aware of the added value that organising this important event can bring to our country’s economy.
Finally, allow me to introduce Mrs Bibiane Motto, promoter of the SIALY project and Managing Director of the Reflex communication agency, exclusive manager of SIALY 2013.
This is the organisation that will support the Government for this event. It will certainly also be pleased to answer your questions.
Thank you for your kind attention.

SIALY 2010: a first attempt, a masterstroke

It took an exceptional personality to pull off an event of international scale at a time when Cameroon, and indeed Africa, were celebrating the fiftieth anniversaries of independence — a time when all eyes were on the cultural, sporting, political and social activities linked to this major commemoration in the history of our continent.

Mrs Bibiane Motto Atsama, a passionate advocate of the agri-food cause and Managing Director of Reflex, rose to the challenge by organising SIALY (International Agri-food Industry Show of Yaoundé). A first edition that demonstrated the skills of its promoter, determined to make her mark in the world of agro-industry.

As if moved by one spirit, the sector’s promoters flocked to the esplanade of Yaoundé City Hall to support this initiative, presenting products of rare originality — proving that the future of agri-food is indeed in Africa. That is fair enough, but the challenges of competition still have to be met and international standards for packaging and product quality adopted, in order to be globally competitive.

Local promoters seem to have understood this well. The date set for the second edition, SIALY 2012, under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Technological Development (MINMIDT), a loyal partner of SIALY, looks very promising. Here’s to great ambitions.
